Winding queues

25 Feb

There’s one thing similar between Tokyo and Singapore — massive queues. The one and only Krisy Kreme outlet opened in Shinjuku in November last year.

As I was strolling to Kinokuniya last Monday afternoon, I spotted a buzzing queue at the entrance of this donut paradise. You can’t really see it from this picture but there are about ten-by-ten people lined up in the orderly queue.

I thought that was crazy until I saw…

This is at least a 100-metre queue along the bridge from Krispy Kreme over the canal that leads to Takashimaya. It’s not fun waiting in the chilly winter for hours, but obviously these are donut mad peeps. Every person I saw leaving the exit carried a large plastic bag with what looked like two to three big boxes of goodies.

I like the occasional donut and discovered Japanese Mister Donut that has the usual chocolate and custard crème varieties. I was told there were Japanesey (maybe matcha donut?) flavours, too. I bought four and by the end of this stash, I couldn’t face another one. It’s deep-fried flour pastry dripping with sugar and chocolate. Heart-stopping and evil.
