When you sleep alone
26 Nov
…Hokkairo (heat pads or pocket warmers) comes to the rescue as winter is creeping into Tokyo.
Although temperatures at night are hovering around eight degrees, I still feel it’s too cold to sleep comfortably without some heat assistance. A month ago, the BFF in New York tasked her boyfriend, when he swung by Tokyo for a friend’s wedding, to bring back 30 days’ worth of these cozy buggers.
From what I understand, hokkairo contains a kind of metal that creates heat when it is exposed to air.
I slip one of these babies into the futon when it gets icy, but the instructions actually warn you against doing that because it’s too hot on bare skin. I don’t have that problem because I wear fleece PJs to bed now. Oh, and the sticky side stays stuck on the mattress so I don’t really see why it’s so dangerous.
There you go, if you are a trailing partner whose corporate warrior lover is always away, a packet of hokkairo per night could make you feel a little less miserable.
The kangaroo has been away for five weeks and Tokyo does feel a little lonesome without him. He’ll return next Thursday and I’m sure the next seven days will whiz past.
