TY Brewery: A perfect place for Sunday brunch

27 May

What’s with all the food posts? Well, I’ve to say I’ve been going out quite a bit so it’s really been how my weekends have been like.

I must say that although I’ve been living in Tokyo for four years, there is so much that I have yet to discover. Take this for an example: TY Brewery in Shinagawa has been a long stay in the Tokyo food scene but I hadn’t heard of it till a friend suggested it for the kangaroo’s birthday brunch. By the way, it is under the same management as Cicada where we went for a cosy date for two.

It was a bit of a hike from our place — 22 minutes on the train according to Yahoo Japan but it involved changing trains twice and we took about 50 minutes in all. Okay, that’s nothing in Tokyo but we’ve been pampered by living in a very central location where everything is pretty much 20-30 minutes away by foot or train.

Here are some photos of the harbour front restaurant:

So pretty… I felt like I was in Sydney or something. Oh how I miss thee…Will be going there in July though – yay!

This is my first attempt at blurring/blacking out other people’s faces. If you’re a longtime reader of Lioness In Japan, you’d have noticed that I pretty much only put up pictures of me, the kangaroo, and maybe the occasional family member. I don’t put up friends’ photos because some folks are a bit funny about being online and I find it to be too bothersome to ask for permission.

But I really wanted to show this picture as it gives an idea of how lovely TY Brewery is. The view from our table was the perfect backdrop to our long leisurely brunch.

We spied two weddings going on in the floating bar next to the restaurant. They happened in quick succession — a pity because factory-style weddings are just so cold. But if you just looked at the individual parties, they were really gorgeous. If I had a “city” wedding, I think one by the water would take the edge off tall, grey buildings. Anyway, we’re still wedding location hunting, if anybody is curious…

This time, I wasn’t enthralled by the food and it didn’t feel appropriate to take photos as we had lots to catch up with our friends. My social life in Tokyo is fairly structured where each group of friends do not mix and we see them pretty much separately, and when the kangaroo is away, I tend to spend more time with other friends.

Anyway, there is still food porn to be had.

Peanut butter brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream tickled my kiddie bone — I love peanut butter and any nut butter for that matter. It was extremely rich but oh-so-worth-it.

The New York cheesecake was described as the “best in the world”, so the kangaroo had to try it. I generally don’t like cheesecake but it really was good. It was dense and didn’t have the typical pungent fragrance of heavy cheesecake.

Just to give you an idea, the menu’s got your usual salads, pizza, and pastas with chicken and steak. There are absolutely no surprises and just solid favourites that are crowd pleasers. I think the point of TY Brewery is not really about the food, as it’s more about the location and whiling the time away over drinks and food with good company.

Doesn’t it remind you of Brewerkz? I’d been looking for somewhere nice to sit by the water and eat, Singapore is full of those places and I really really miss it – so glad this place is here…

Oh yeah, now that you mentioned it – it really does remind me of brewerkz too. And cafe iguana!!

Weekends at Brewerz or Iguana was one of my favourite parts of living in Singapore – up late, call round to see who isn’t too badly hungover to meet up, then down to the river somewhere for breakfast/lunch. Any more places like this you try I’d love to hear about – I’m pretty new to to Tokyo. Your blog is really well written and helpful – thanks!
