Tough as nails

Kanojo (“She” in Japanese): You are so confident and independent. Japanese women are not like that. I admire you. Japanese women pretend to be kawaii (cute) and feminine, so they look helpless and men like that.
Me: Why…thank you! That’s very nice of you. (pause: I was fishing around for something else to say. I was truly at a loss for words). You’re very confident, too!
Kanojo: thank you!
Me: So your husband must be a very different kind of Japanese man?
Kanojo: Ah, he’s very traditional.
Me: So what does he think of having a confident and independent wife?
Kanojo: He doesn’t know.
Wow, who’s the boss, eh?
