Tokyo Nugget #9: A unique way of designing snacks
1 Mar
Back in the day (like a few months ago) when I was still a snack junkie, I would try the plethora of offerings at the conbini. The colourful packets and flavours beckoned my curiosity and here is a pattern I spotted with less run-of-the-mill ones:
Snacks try to look or taste like a Japanese dish.
Check out the endamame “chips”:
It looks like an endamame bean and the flavour emulates edamame beans. I used to fancy this one because it wasn’t very salty and I didn’t feel like I had over-indulged, plus it was 80 calories for a palm-sized packet.
I wish I took pictures of the other ones I’ve had like katsu (deep-fried breaded pork cutlet) — the “chips” looked like miniature katsu steaks with the orange-brown bread crumbs and the tonkatsu sauce flavour. I’ve also tasted Twistie-like chips infused with soba soup noodle aroma. Another fave is potato chips laced with the “essence” of grilled hotate (scallop) with butter.
On another note, I stopped snacking at night and being 60 to 70 per cent raw helped me “release” almost 4kg (9 lbs) in one month. But I would still encourage you try some of these kawaii snacks for the novelty.
