Tokyo Nugget #10: Fruit at ridiculous prices

9 Mar

This is probably not such a rare bob of information — we all know precious fruit like square watermelons and honeydews cost the earth in Tokes.

But let’s look at some real evidence on other less sensational fruit from Isetan.

Not only do these strawberries cost a whopping 8,400JPY per tray, they look absolutely unreal and give off a heady fragrance of sweet strawberries.

That’s what you have here: the Porsche of all strawberries. I don’t think my stomach deserves such royal treatment, but I like looking at perfect fruit.

Any other sightings of pricey fruit that knocked your socks off?

    Hi,

I just came across your blog today. Very interesting reads. I enjoy reading blogs about expats living in Japan as I hope to one day (in about a year or so) to be doing the same (living and teaching in Japan).

While I enjoy fruit such as strawberries and melons I just can’t get over how expensive they are over there! I mean, with everybody trying to save money, you would think people wouldn’t charge that much!

(I have studied abroad before there and the prices are sometimes too ridiculous for me to handle lol).

I hope you don’t mind if I follow your blog from time to time.

Yeah, I’m with you on cheaper prices in the current economic climate but the average Japanese here is not affected by it because companies don’t retrench or fire employees. Only a small fraction of those in car manufacturing seem to be suffering, but many gaijins have left Japan, particularly the finance peeps.

Are those strawberries like bigger than apples or are they just magnified in the photo?

Nope they are not as big as apples but they are like three times the size of normal strawberries.

I managed to find mangoes(200yen each) and kiwis( 3 for 298 yen) at a small supermarket near Mark City and cheap for Tokyo standards.

So happy to get fruits!! hehehe

That’s cheap. I’m enjoying Filipino mangoes at that price too. I generally buy whatever is in season or on sale at the supermarket when it comes to fruit. But I still can’t bring myself to pay 1,950JPY for a small watermelon. Gotta load up when I visit SG come June!
