There’s Thai food everywhere in Sydney

23 Dec

One thing that strikes me about Sydney is there’s a Thai restaurant in almost every block in any given Sydney neighbourhood. And that suits me fine as I adore the colourful, spicy dishes the cuisine has to offer. We had Thai almost every other meal and it’s been awesome tasting Asian spices so often. What a treat.

You get pretty authentic stuff but you sometimes you’ll come across Aussie-fied Thai food, like stir-fried lamb. It sounds a bit weird but it was mouth-watering.

We caught up with our friends who got hitched in Bali, Steve and Fleur, whom we had dinner and drinks at the Bank Hotel in Newtown. Just go right down to the basement and the Thai restaurant takes up the whole space.

Although it was “snooty Thai food” (as the kangaroo put it), the atmosphere was very laid-back, especially since it’s summer.

As usual, our friends had to stop us from ordering too much food because the kangaroo and I kept thinking in terms of Japanese servings.

The picture is not very good in showing scale but this bowl of rice was huge. It was as if they emptied out the entire contents of a medium-sized rice cooker.

The baby octopus salad was drizzled in a sweet Thai chilli sauce that seems sweeter for the Aussie palate. Everything is bigger and bolder Down Under and it’s kind of cute. I would also recommend the stir-fried chicken with chilli and cashews as the dried chilli is fire-hot and will please any chilli padi freak. Sorry, I don’t have a photo because I was too caught up in the conversation to snap away.

I’m having a good time catching up with the kangaroo’s family and friends but I’m feeling quite exhausted from all the wining and dining. We seem to have many appointments and need to coordinate our schedules as it’s impossible to take public transport from the boonies (it means the country, but I’m exaggerating, I’m in the suburbs) to town.

We get up at 7am or before to drive somewhere for something, then there’s someone to meet, and we head back home for a snooze, but then we’re off to have dinner with another bunch of people in no time.

I wish I could sleep in but tomorrow is more of a work day — have to do a post office run as Beauty Box is not resting, even during the Christmas season. The kangaroo is working crazy hours from 1pm to 4am most weekdays. He drinks a latte after dinner every night.

There’s no rest for the wicked and I hope we can be lazy for a few days on the beach after Christmas.

G: I think Lemongrass is pretty good but a bit pricey and Golden Mile Complex is where you can find cheap Thai food but the atmosphere is a little lacking.

ambien: yeah, I brought several tins of Meiji collagen in case there were orders and they are all wiped out by now! :)
