South beach meets raw birthday party
As promised, I will blog about the kangaroo’s birthday bash at our place. It was definitely a night to remember that rounded up with crazy shenanigans — you know who you are!
I couldn’t really get the kangaroo a super nice present this year, so I thought I would make him a South Beach bonanza spread for his birthday. He lost over 10kg since the day after Christmas Day 2008 and has had to buy new pants to fit his leaner frame. He’s still on it but is more lax on weekends.
People who know us probably think we are diet-crazy folks but it’s just the way we eat. It’s a good thing he likes salads or I would be slaving away in the kitchen all day making separate meals all the time.
Anyway, it was very heartening to have so many friends come by — I feel like this is our home because we’ve got an awesome set of friends and home is where the heart is. The kangaroo got showered with gifts from running gear, to gardening tools, to fancy whiskey.
A friend took more pictures than we did and thank goodness for that. I’ve got other party shots of people but I don’t know how they would feel being on my blog like this so please don’t think food pix are the only ones of the party!
The low-fat cheddar cheese was a hit. Not that I know what it tasted like but it was all gobbled up.
A Mediterranean platter…
I got a good review from the kangaroo on this one. A chef should always sample her food, but I can’t do eggs even if you pin me to the ground with my arm twisted.
Recipe: Blend cooked yolks with cashew, tumeric, lime, garlic and sea salt. Pour it into a ziplock bag and squeeze it out into the whites. Sprinkle chopped green onions as garnish.
The kangaroo loves sausages but I didn’t want to just serve it plain so I went back in time and remembered these retro canapés — skewered pineapple slices with wieners. I heard they were good, too.
The kangaroo adores beef so we had to have some on his special day.
You know, I have read about vegetarians/vegans who refuse to cook meat for their partners/spouses but I take a different stance to that. I love it when he digs into something I made and says it tastes great, so as much as I find it kind of gross, I’ll do it willingly. There’s no point going off on my own culinary path and expecting him to follow. Being raw is a very marginal lifestyle.
So what did I have? I made a spinach salad, mango salsa, cabbage and carrot sesame slaw, and a fruit salad. I think they didn’t look too strange to anyone…
This ice-cream cake was not very South Beach but what the hell! It was his birthday!
A friend brought some party poppers…
And a mean-looking gun…
Throughout the night, the kangaroo looked like this. He was very happy and we fell into our futon exhausted and weren’t quite sure what hit us.

Hi aichaku, thanks!! I def feel GREAT.
For me personally, it’s impt to stay raw most of the time.
BUT. When I started, I was about 50-60% raw (eg. fruit smoothie with veggie omelette in the morning; salad with grilled salmon at night), I dropped off weight like crazy in my first month. So I think the key is to stop eating refined sugar, carbs, and processed food.
You should only eat as much raw as you are comfortable with!

Thanks babe! The devilled eggs are really quite easy and foolproof. I got it from this blog called Kalyn’s Kitchen and she says devilled eggs are always a hit at parties.
