my favourite thing to do in Japan……ONSEN
that’s the symbol for onsens, or hot springs, in ryokans (traditional Japanese inns).
thanks to this beautiful travel magazine, Paper Sky, that I bought when I first arrived last October, I had a slew of photographs I could use for my final exam presentation.
I didn’t think I would have fun doing this, but it sure beats mugging grammar or kanji. I felt like I was in primary school, cutting and pasting with UHU glue. My language exchange partner cleaned up my broken Japanese and taught me the correct words for onsen-related things. I decided to finish this early because the kangaroo is returning to the shoebox this Saturday and we’re going on a road trip on Sunday so there would be no time at all this weekend for anything else but having fun. yippee.

The last time I wanted to go for onsen, my jap colleague told me (quietly and solemnly) that I will not be allowed in because…. of my tattoos!
Since you are doing research, can you find out if that is true???
btw, I don’t have gigantic dragons crawling up my back….
well she could’ve been playing on the safe side — it seems to be the Japanese way — if it’s a rule, it’s a rule. BUT, i find that if you just go in as a clueless tourist, i’m sure you’ll get away with it.
even earrings are not allowed in swimming pools here. i don’t really know what is the reason but i just acted like i didn’t know. haha. and put tape over my ears which the water promptly washed away…:p
