Who am I...?

I'm a web editor from Singapore living in Tokyo. I'm building websites for a living as a writer on the go. I worked in print media for six years until I moved countries and used the Internet as a way to have a viable, mobile career. The Internet is a fascinating space and I never thought I would ever morph into a web chick - but here I am.

This blog is about...

...The ups and downs of expat life, trailing partner issues, food, travel, and Japanese culture. It's a way to keep in touch with friends back home and all over the world, plus it's a corner for me to showcase my work. But really, I'm just a restless spirit looking for great adventures and fabulous food.

My top 12 moments in Bali

Although it has only been less than two weeks since I returned from Bali, my Balinese getaway feels like it happened an eternity ago. I put up all my pictures on Facebook and wondered how I am going to blog about this amazing experience, so I’m going to list all the fun things I did in Bali, which I highly recommend to anyone planning a trip there.

#1: Late lunch at Ku De Ta
If you start at two-ish for lunch, you just need to lounge around for an hour or two more for the six o-clock sunset that is just spectacular.

The food is pretty amazing, too. Although “fusion” feels like a tired label these days, Ku De Ta truly has a delicious selection.

That’s creamy bacon pasta, crispy mushroom pizza, pan-seared tuna with beetroot and rocket, and my absolute favourite — seafood risotto. The plump shrimps were just succulent.

We had a three-part dessert, too, which was extremely decadent (pecan pie with vanilla ice-cream, white chocolate cones, fruit platters) and the undeniable crowd pleaser was the sorbet:

The cocktails were fresh and juicy, but were at “Australian prices”:

They were also too thirst-quenching that we hung around till 9pm.

I was a bit blurry by then…Awesome day, nonetheless.

#2: Swimming in an infinity pool.

Photobucket

Our villa was on top of a hill so we had a panoramic view of Jimbaran.

#3: Taking a nap in our lovely room.

Photobucket

With such luxurious digs, who needs to keep going out everyday while in Bali? These huge king-sized beds were so comfy and necessary for lying down after too many cocktails.

#4: Getting my nails done on the beach.

Photobucket

I had a small skirmish with my nail lady in Kuta because we didn’t really agree on a price before she started. In the end, I paid twice the normal rate of 40,000 rupiah (SGD8) but it was worth it and I got so many compliments for the flowers on my nails.

The view was fabulous, too:

#5: Walking on the beach.

The sand is more yellowish than the white beaches of Thailand or the Maldives, but it was still pretty soft to the touch.

#6: Looking at chic shops in Seminyak

My image of Bali lies in the cool boho district of Seminyak but there’s a lot more to Bali than this cosmopolitan hub.

#7: Digging into fresh seafood at Jimbaran Bay

Photobucket

Sorry I don’t have food pictures for the divine garoupa, jumbo prawns, kangkong, and sambal I had, but trust me, seafood lovers will not tire of this stretch of beach stalls that have the freshest fish on offer.

#8: Lunch or Dinner at Trattoria

Photobucket

If you get sick of Indonesian food, head on over to Trattoria in Jalan Oberoi, Seminyak.

Photobucket

My ragu pasta was yummy but the kangaroo’s creamy tortellini was much more mouth-watering. Unfortunately the picture I took was terrible so there’s no image of his delicious meal.

#9: Taking a day trip to Ubud

Photobucket

The view of the volcano in Ubud is quite mesmerizing and worth the long drive up (two hours from Jimbaran).

On a separate day, we headed back to one of the villages near Ubud for a bike ride:

It was fun weaving through the tiny dirt trails lined with tall grass. Despite bragging about our Nepal trip, I embarrassed myself by taking a few spills.

#9: Going on an elephant safari

On the same day as the bike ride, we went on an elephant safari ride where we made friends with our elephant, Olin, a 25-year-old virgin. We were told by her trainer that elephants should mate at age 20, to which the kangaroo quipped, “Maybe she thinks you’re her boyfriend!”

Photobucket

We fed Olin some sugarcane after her ride:

Elephants are lovely creatures with their gentle eyes and sweet nature.

#10: Buying cheap DVDs in Legian

Photobucket

You can’t really see the rows of DVDs lining the flimsy shelves from this picture but believe me there are tons of titles to choose from.

#11: Eating the ubiquitous hotel hamburger

Photobucket

You can’t do a resort stay without at least indulging in one of these babies. They never go wrong and are an antidote to huge hunger pangs caused by hangovers and lots of walking around.

#12: Dressing up for a wedding party

Photobucket

I got this dress from Johor Bahru for RM79 (approx. SGD40) but it made me feel like a million bucks. It’s not often I get to play dress up with the kangaroo so it was heaps of fun.
