It’s been a frantic week
26 Nov
I’ve been terrible at updating my blog these days. I feel a bit guilty because I always groan when I see something like this on my favourite blogs — so-and-so would say they’ve been away on holiday or been busy with real life so they can’t really catch up in the virtual world.
I’m actually exhausted right now. It’s been a whirlwind 10 days in Tokyo, with a weekend getaway to Osaka, Kyoto and Nara with the kangaroo and his mum.
In between classes, I met up with her to do some shopping and sight-seeing. She was quite intimidated by the language so she wasn’t sure of how to get around. I didn’t mind taking her to all my favourite places — it made Tokyo feel like home. I love it when people come to visit. Through her, I think I understand the kangaroo better. We’ve been together for four years but I’m sure there are many sides to him that I still don’t know. It’s been interesting to see where he gets some of his traits from — his optimistic outlook in life, boundless energy, love of naps, ice-cream, steak and chocolate are all genetic. I’ve got lots of scenic pictures but you’ll have to wait a little before I put them up. I still haven’t got my ass down to writing about my Beijing trip (it’s beginning to feel kind of over and done with…).
But also, I see how his family is affected by his parents’ divorce. His mum referred to her ex-husband a lot. Even though the break up happened maybe 13-15 years ago, she could not help but talk about him because they remain connected through their kids and various business endeavours. I sensed that she was a little lonely and sad when the kangaroo left for his trip. We get along great but being with your son is incomparable.
I’m sitting on the futon with a glass of Chardonnay by my side and relishing the alone time for a bit. The kangaroo has flown off to Sydney for business but his mum has one more night in Tokyo. We’ll be shopping in Ginza tomorrow before she catches the 3pm Narita Express to the airport.
It’s been a fun week but I look forward to going back to my routine and have to bury my nose in some Japanese study because the JLPT test is this Sunday. After that, maybe I’ll have more time to reflect and check in here a little more.
