Hiroshima Day 1: First impressions

6 Oct

The kangaroo loves taking short trips when he breezes back into town. The last time we took a holiday within Japan was to Hokkaido for snowboarding.

“Let’s spend a few days out of Tokyo, babe,” he suggested in August.

“Where do you want to go?” I asked.

Hiroshima!”

“Why Hiroshima?”

“Because I’ve never been there…”

“Okay!”

And so we packed our bags and hopped onto a shinkansen.

We wanted to spend our last night in a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) in Miyajima, an island near Hiroshima, so we decided on a mid-range hotel to save some pennies. But in Japan, mid-range looks like this:

Those were my bananas. I do a lot of mono-eating when I’m on the road.

It felt like we were back in the shoebox, but it suited our needs and was just a few minutes away from the Hiroshima JR station.

I was struck by how quiet this small city was. I guess I am too used to the massive, heaving crowds in Tokyo, but I realized it was just what I needed — a little peace and quiet.

The urban landscape of Hiroshima looks quite quaint with its trams, which remind me of Melbourne.

We lazed around in our hotel room for an hour and then stepped out to discover what Hiroshima had to offer.

Yeah we planned to go a week before the actual date and only booked our hotels two days before our arrival. It was a good thing it was non-peak season.
