Who am I...?

I'm a web editor from Singapore living in Tokyo. I'm building websites for a living as a writer on the go. I worked in print media for six years until I moved countries and used the Internet as a way to have a viable, mobile career. The Internet is a fascinating space and I never thought I would ever morph into a web chick - but here I am.

This blog is about...

...The ups and downs of expat life, trailing partner issues, food, travel, and Japanese culture. It's a way to keep in touch with friends back home and all over the world, plus it's a corner for me to showcase my work. But really, I'm just a restless spirit looking for great adventures and fabulous food.

G-Star mania

Honestly, I had never heard of Dutch military-inspired designer label, G-Star, until one of my gal pals got an invite to a recent sample sale at Bell Commons. I was intimidated by their website and looked like they had expensive, uber-cool togs so I just assumed that even at sale price, I wouldn’t be able to afford anything.

But my friend assured me that you could buy jeans for as little as JPY2,000 (SGD26) but the original price is JPY20,000 (SGD260). In a heartbeat, I changed my mind.

I must say that sample sales in Tokyo are very civilized. You are only allowed to try three pieces at one time so there was virtually no queue at the dressing room area. In Singapore, the lines outside the changing rooms are enough to make you want to run for the door and not go back.

Another thing that was unusual to me was each person was allotted only one hour to shop but I don’t think they can really keep track of that. It was a pretty small space so it was hard to stay for long anyway. Also, the range wasn’t that wide, but I did find three pieces — a long-sleeved yellow top and two pairs of dark blue jeans.

What impressed me was that their autumn/winter jackets were truly at rock bottom price. Some were marked down from JPY40,000 (SGD516) to JPY4,000 (SGD51) and they were down jackets, which are normally fairly pricey because of their material.

The clothes were definitely snapped up quickly and there were empty racks by the time my hour was up. One of my friends actually found eight pieces she liked and everyone else had an average of three or four. It was truly an excellent shopping high.

I am wearing one of the two pairs of jeans I bought — these skinny jeans are super comfy and pretty hip with distressed patches and fake rips. You can be sure I’ll be at the end of summer sale in Aug/Sept.
