Driving all the way to Kamakura for a bit of Bill Granger

22 Jul

“Hey, do you want to check out bills in Kamakura?” a friend suggested with a glint in her eye. I had no idea what bills was and was more keen on the road trip to get out of Tokyo two weekends ago.

After some surfing on the Internet, bills turned out to be famous Aussie chef Bill Granger’s (Sydney’s breakfast king!) new restaurant in Japan. My old foodie instincts came back and a slice of fresh Aussie fare in the middle of Japan was certainly a quaint idea.

We piled into a friend’s car and zoomed off to this beach town.

The sunset was beautiful…

The décor was very Sydney-like and transported me back to my annual jaunts Down Under.

Now aren’t you dying to know how the food was? Well, I only had a veggie pasta with goat’s cheese and a raspberry strawberry slushy.

The pasta was very fresh and savoury. The cheese smelled very pungent, but like most goat’s cheese, the flavour was just salty and lighter than its aroma.

My friend had Granger’s classic corn fritters with bacon and avocado and she said it was pretty good.

Another friend had the duck salad and smacked his lips over it. Overall it was good enough for us to want to return sometime in the future to try his other classic dish, the ricotta and honeycomb butter pancakes.

The luscious ingredients listed in the menu will leave you undecided and drooling for quite a while. I think bills is a hit because it matches the Japanese aesthetic of simple fare that boasts super fresh produce and a gentle hand with seasoning.
