Doing the taco
I was really sick of my usual fare — miso soup, yakisoba (fried noodles), pasta, fried rice and stir-fries. Even a curry didn’t appeal, so while I was grazing at Midtown’s sprawling new 24-hour supermarket, Precce, I spotted a taco kit. I learned how to make this last New Year’s Eve on that houseboat adventure we had. To me, this is like a Mexican popiah (fresh Chinese springrolls that you make by yourself on the spot). You get all the ingredients ready, stir the main star (minced beef and taco powder) and toast the shells — tada…ready to eat.
After cramming in four tacos, onaka ga ipai (my tum is full to the max). I’m not sure I could finish the rest (it’s a 12-piece pack) anytime soon. What rounded up this leisurely lunch on my day-off from teaching is Sleepless in Seattle in Japanese on the telly. The dialogue was fairly simple and I was surprised I could understand a lot of it. Yay. Sometimes I crave for current, up-to-date TV but I’ll have to make do.
The instructions encouraged adding mayonnaise and I nearly used the Japanese mayo I had but had second thoughts. Tacos are pretty heavy in flavour with the avocado, tomatoes, salsa sauce, minced beef and shredded cheese. And all washed down with some beauty rice tea (it’s a new bottled tea they are selling here. I don’t know how it will make me beautiful but what the hell?).
Alrighty, back to work now.

yeah, in japan the trend for food and drink is about health and beauty.
there’s even a convienience store, called Natural Lawson, that is dedicated to providing products of that nature. needless to say, it’s my fave. i love their selection of health teas - all sugarless of course!
