Who am I...?

I'm a web editor from Singapore living in Tokyo. I'm building websites for a living as a writer on the go. I worked in print media for six years until I moved countries and used the Internet as a way to have a viable, mobile career. The Internet is a fascinating space and I never thought I would ever morph into a web chick - but here I am.

This blog is about...

...The ups and downs of expat life, trailing partner issues, food, travel, and Japanese culture. It's a way to keep in touch with friends back home and all over the world, plus it's a corner for me to showcase my work. But really, I'm just a restless spirit looking for great adventures and fabulous food.

Diet anger

Maybe I really need a bit of sugar to feel normal. I am suddenly attacked by a surge of fury that I am letting the bloody South Beach Diet book control my life. Why do I have to have absolutely no carbs, except cardboardy salads and steamed broccoli? Is a fistful of rice really so sinful?

Well, while I certainly agree my insulin levels needed adjusting (I was eating every three hours — I came to a point where I was sick of chewing but my stomach overruled my mouth), but this is shite. How can anyone eat salads EVERY-friggin-DAY? I love my greens but I just can’t take it anymore.

So I decided to modify. Maybe the key to a svelte figure is about cutting out some things and not all lovely food. Also, moderation is an old adage to consider. What’s life when cherry tomatoes are the only thing to look forward to in the day? So, i’m going to drastically decrease my intake of the following. The culprits of me muffin are:

1. Juice. Yessiree, too much nectar will pad your thighs with fat. The South Beach book says the more processed fruit is, your body is more able to absorb and crunch down on the sugar — hence the sudden spike in your insulin levels and gives you a burst of energy that some people regard as feeling refreshed.

2. Onigiris. This is a staple in Japan. This seaweed rice snack is cheap (below 200 yen for one), delicious, and available in every single convienient store, of which several dot every single street in Tokyo. The white rice and oft-used mayo do horrors to any flat tum.

3. MacDonald’s. Especially eaten first thing in the morning, you’ll be hankering after sugar all day because of the huge dose it infuses your body. South Beach logic: The more sugar you consume in the first thing you eat in the day determines how much sugar you will crave through the day.

4. Pasta. Need I say more? I hoover spaghetti bolognaise at least once a week. I’m a pig, I know. I also love macaroni soup with shredded chicken. My heart will always lie with pasta but I’ve got to cut down from eating this almost everyday to just once a week or less.

5. MSG. This widespread ingredient comes from beetroot which contains a shiteload of sugar. As a Chinese Singaporean, I am overly fond of this addictive snack.

6. Supper. Sigh, this is one of my favourite things to do after a big night of drinking. Ramen, instant noodles, pizza, MacDonald’s… They all should go.

7. What’s the last deadly diet sin? It’s a toss up between potatoes and creamy coconuty cocktails.

Should I just become a nun, where my tastebuds are concerned? Greek salads are not turn ons — they are like men with small penises. Sigh. Someone please keep me away from the carbonara. Ooo, that’s one other evil.

i also feel sian of having to eat healthy all the time. but then, as time went by, i developed an aversion to some foods, eg. ice cream, creamy pastas, sugar in coffee, butter, cheesy stuff, colas, sugared drinks, oily foods, salted egg, chwee kueh, etc I still like chips although i hardly buy them because they give me sore throat most of the time. i love noodles and bread too but i try to remind myself not to eat it, and i developed a strange extreme like for vegetables of every kind! and i still cannot give up fried food, tempura squid and fried chix wings!

Just have to work at it a little more and put more variety in your meals lor.

yeah, i’m trying new recipes and only sticking to whole wheat grain or pasta. As for carbs, i’m going to leave this one out of dinner (and breakfast occasionally). it’s horrible to become food obsessed.

i rem wakeboarding several years back and always met older women in their late 20s and 30s. i used to wonder why even the slim ones had big tummies. sigh. my face is not looking at the challenge of gravity yet, but my stomach is certianly facing some horizontal problems. :-(

    pressing on…
