It's quite common to hear Singaporeans complaining and being unhappy. I always feel Singaporeans tend to be a bit negative about life in general. Maybe it's because it feels hard to obtain the comforts of life...

LOL - I didn't know they used to wrap sanitary pads in newspaper!!

On the book point, yes it's very common to shield your choice of book with a cover in Japan. You will see it everywhere! I used to wonder if they had very saucy titles but I realised it's for any book they are reading.

I personally don't do it because I don't have a problem with other people knowing what I am reading on the train.

Oh yeah, you got go book shop and buy books or not? They also got brown paper book cover, because apparently Japanese consider their choice of books as private. And apparently, they won't show you their book cases. So I thought maybe you would see people reading covered books on train or bus..hehe

Hehe, find your sick food very "feng fu". Think I will only have appetite for plain rice porridge + kiam chai (salted cucumber) + fermented tou fu (beancurd) lor. ;p

That's right, you can get Chinese buns and lo mai kai (sticky rice) from the steamer they set up. I think hot sandwiches, too, if I recall.

I would check out the Lebanese convenience stores in Sydney on my next trip. Aussie conbinis are truly well-stocked too. I remember buying toothpaste once. I will try a baclava — the kangaroo said they are awesome sweet pastries to devour.

I know, I absolutelty HEART Japanese 'conbinis'.
At all odd hours, I can buy emergency dog food for my mutt, skincare products (!), do drycleaning, send mail, withdraw money and eat yummy but unhealthy Bentos!

I cant remember what Singaporean convenience stores are like but I think when I lived in Singers, I bought "Lo Mai Kai" and some buns once.

Convenience stores in Australia rock too. Esp the ones opened by the Lebanese because they sell cheap and oh-so-good BACLAVAS!
