A nightmarish craving like never before

I had a three-day craving for hot dogs. I know, I’m a vegetarian/raw foodie, and I’m not supposed to talk about such a repulsive impulse, but you know, vegetarians are human too (you can imagine tragic violin music now).
I’ve been veggie for almost seven months, and honestly, I’ve not hankered after meat at all. It’s more of the smell of old eats that makes me feel nostalgic: fried chicken wings, grilled salmon, or towering hamburgers with a side of fries.
But then an image of tearing flesh and the stench of animal beastliness will replace the nostalgia. I just feel the emotions that mingle with these foods — hanging out at a pub, laughing, not caring about tomorrow (or my waistline) and just having a good time with friends — and I go on my way.
So what brought on this awful craving? Perhaps there are many changes going on in my life so I feel uncertain and a little bit lost. I wanted comfort.
Hot dogs were a regular feature in my childhood. When I was six or seven, my mother would pile my sisters and I into the car on Saturdays and we would head over to the pool for swimming lessons.
After what seemed like a whole afternoon of splashing and froggie-style laps, we were always rewarded with mini hot dogs which were speared in the middle with toothpicks that had colourful cellophane bits at the ends. The bread was soft and toasted but slightly crusty on the edges and buttered to perfection. This also explains why I always associate the smell of chlorine with hot dogs.
On a grocery run during these three days of weird mental wanderings, I actually looked at sausages in the supermarket and considered making myself a batch. Better home-made than from a filthy fast food joint, eh? But they looked like dismembered dead fingers! Argh! Gross!
I’m over it. I think vegan sausages are highly disgusting, too.
Just thought you would like to peek into the mind of a newbie vegetarian. Yes, we are people with weaknesses and not eating meat forever and ever is not like flipping a switch in your brain. One FAQ down, any more you wanna know?
