Who am I...?

An ex-journo and former techno phobe from Singapore living in Tokyo, I worked in print media for six years until I moved countries in 2006 and used the Internet as a way to have a viable, mobile career. Now, I'm a blogger on the go who runs an online beauty biz from wherever I might be. I never thought I would ever morph into a web chick - but here I am.

This blog is about...

...The ups and downs of expat life, trailing partner issues, food, travel, and Japanese culture. It's a way to keep in touch with friends back home and all over the world, plus it's a corner for me to showcase my work. But really, I'm just a restless spirit looking for great adventures and fabulous food.

A girl’s right to fruit

For any fruit and veggie lover, getting your heart’s desire in Tokyo is extremely challenging. Okay for any fruit-mad individual (like me) from Southeast Asia would have this problem.

Fruit in Singapore is ridiculously, stupendously affordable. SGD3 (USD2) for four juicy mangoes, SGD3 for two large sexy watermelons, SGD1.60 (USD1) for six Gala apples, SGD4 (USD2.70) for a punnet of blueberries.

But in Tokyo, I have to pay 850JPY (USD9.20) for one small watermelon and 580JPY (USD6.80) for a tiny cantaloupe that can be devoured in one sitting. But I don’t — because it’s a treat so I usually split them up in two or three sections and eat them. Obviously they are in season or they wouldn’t have come down from their previous lofty price of 3,500JPY (USD37). And these weren’t even the uber-expensive ones that are meant as gifts.

For three years in Tokyo, I resisted expensive fruit and would just nosh on cheap apples, strawberries and grapefruit.

But I read an interesting article on having an “abundant” mindset and decided I’ve been too cheap with myself, my life, and the kangaroo. It’s the recession, not hell on earth.

I already had a third of this gorgeous fruit…Two more servings to go. I’m an animal.
