A break from school
19 Mar
The exams are over! Man, I’m so glad. I was getting quite tired of taking Japanese lessons everyday. Most days, I’m pretty into it, but there are some moments when I just can’t seem to absorb much.
I’m constantly amazed at my classmates who are always on the ball. I used to think they either must have a great passion or a huge urgency to become fluent. But a couple of them are here just to take a year off from work. Chris, the American dude, is one such example. He’s so dedicated and enthusiastic. He makes notes and flash cards, plus he always hands in his homework on time. I thought he must be a Japanophile but he told me he had no idea what Japanese was like. Before he wrapped up his art teaching job in HK, he decided learning one of the most difficult languages in the world should be a fun way to spend his one year off — he told me this in a deadpan voice of course.
In the past couple of weeks, I felt like I was suffering when I tried to dissect alien grammar structures and memorise endless lists of vocabulary. However, I see that the tests and exams are good opportunities to drill this stuff into my head — permanently, I hope.
In the meantime, I’ll be focusing on work and maybe do a bit of travel on my own during this short break.
